IT seems most people support Richard Pennicuik – aka ‘the Thornlie Tree Man’ – in his battle with the City of Gosnells over the retention of a gum tree outside his Hume Road property.

Mr Pennicuik has been up the tree since December 7 and according to respondents to a recent inmycommunity poll, the majority of people support his cause.

Of the 279 respondents,  more than 40 per cent said he was a hero and admired him for fighting for his principles.

Almost 26 per cent said they supported his protest at first but now felt the issue had dragged on too long. They also felt sorry for his neighbours.

The remaining 33 per cent wanted the tree cut down immediately and believe Mr Pennicuik was a publicity seeker.

Let Richard Pennicuik keep the tree he adores.

This tree is an old dame lets respect its age and beauty and the absolute joy it obviously brings to Richard's day. Not forgetting the tree's mere presence acts as a carbon emission off set so of value to us all , trees also beautify suburbia. Anyone criticising Richard needs to remember that without passion there is nothing and we are all living on top of Mother Earths face so lets tread lightly and appreciate all her natural beauty, not chop it down.

The man deserves our respect and support, he is standing up for something he believes in, not for fame or self advantage, but because he believes it to be right. To our premier and others who just dont seem to understand, you need to grow up and respect a man who is prepared to suffer for what he believes. I dont know him, never met him, but i wish you all the luck Tree Man.

Respecting anothers belief, I thought, was fundamental to living in Australia.
Respecting a passion to cook, to study, to drive, - or even sufficient passion to live day and night for 100days in the heart of a tree.

If we, as people are ever to understand the meaning of the word RESPECT we need to be able to accept that a person can be passionate about many things. The passion can last for as long as the person lives.
Some will judge as long as they breath, it is they, that I feel sorry for.
Thier lack of understanding, thier lack of compassion.
As for the neighbours, - thier problem is with thier council confirming that the tree will not be left in one piece.. (as far as I am aware at the moment)

If the Thornlie Tree Man is to be a hero, he would have to be the most modest hero for the most basic issue that I have ever encountered..

The right for a tree to provide the oxygen that we breathe..

The council have made the decision that no matter what the tree comes down.
giving in now and they fear the floodgates will open to the plans to reshape the area will be met with more similar protests.
its quiet funny seeing how richard has rocked the council and how clandestine discussions involving him at the council offices have become.
the old adage, power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely never rang so true
